Have you ever wondered how living surrounded by greenery can influence, compared to living surrounded by floors? It seems that recent research from the UK suggests that seeing green landscapes often has positive health effects. It is not only that you breathe better quality air, but they can also help you reduce cravings for foods such as chocolate, caffeine or alcohol. (We're already looking to move out of town!)

At study, published in the Health & Place magazine, 149 people between the ages of 21 and 65 participated. They had to take an online survey that contained questions about your demographics, the local environment, the negative effects (depression, anxiety, etc.) and the cravings for things by unhealthy foods like chocolate, caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol. Participants rated the intensity, imagery, and intrusion of their cravings on an 11-point scale.

Following this survey, the researchers determined the percentage of green space that the participants owned and regularly viewed from their homes. It turns out that people exposed to nature had less frequent and less strong cravings. In fact, the effect was strongest in those who could actually see greenery from their homes or had access to gardens.

Contact with nature is related to a reduction in negative mood

While the study didn't really test whether increasing exposure to nature can reduce cravings, it does appear that more exposure to nature may have a positive effect. Being more mindful of nature has always been linked to improved mood, as well as less frequent and intense cravings. The study built on previous research, theorizing that more exposure to nature is linked to fewer cravings.

In addition, exercising outdoors also increases mental and physical well-being. However, many more studies are needed to establish whether the benefits that may extend to cravings. Even so, it never hurts to put on your shoes, put on your sports clothes and go out to train. The more contact with nature, the better. Take advantage of vacation days to relax and escape all cravings for junk food.
