Non-alcoholic martini: is it a healthy drink?

non-alcoholic martini

A healthy lifestyle has only recently promoted a lower consumption of alcoholic beverages. However, more and more brands are betting on this type of alcohol-free products. The latest non-alcoholic Martini bet is two versions of its classic aperitif vermouth.

As already happened with Beefeater Light, where its amount of alcohol was reduced by half, the new red aperitif vermouth and Floreale seek to be the healthy option compared to the classic Martini. Will they have succeeded?

Ingredients and nutritional values

The components of these drinks vary quite a bit from the alcoholic options. In this case, taking the red aperitif Martini as an example, its ingredients are «Dealcoholized wine, sugar, water, natural aromas, fruit and vegetable coloring concentrate, preservatives: E202, E242, E211, acidulant: E330, acidity regulator: E334«.

El dealcoholized wine is exactly what it sounds like: a low alcohol wine. To get this type of "alcoholic-free" wine, it would be enough to simply market the grape juice as such. True non-alcoholic wines undergo the entire winemaking process (fermentation, aging, etc.), and then go through a dealcoholization process, which removes alcohol from the final product.

In addition, the nutritional value per 100 ml of product is:

  • Energy value: 60 calories
  • Fat: 0 grams
    • Of which saturated: 0 grams
  • Carbohydrates: 14 grams
    • Of which sugars: 14 grams
  • Protein: 0 grams
  • Salt: 0 grams

Although they may seem low in calories, when compared to other alcoholic beverages, it should be remembered that they are per 100 ml. That is, we will have to take into account the amount we drink and the times we repeat. Also, those chemical preservatives can cause intestinal discomfort in many people. They are used to preserve the drink for longer, but excessive intake could pose a health problem.

not a fit drink

Despite the fact that it advertises that it is alcohol-free, it must be clear that it is not the same as a drink 0'0%. It is true that there is less than 0% alcohol, but it is not completely free of this substance. As we mentioned before, this type of wine has been completely fermented, aged and vinified, so most of the alcohol content has been removed before bottling. This means that traces of ethanol may still remain.

On the other hand, the sugar content is quite high. Although not too different from the Martini with alcohol (16 grams), it is still a high intake per glass. Taking into account that we will take at least 100 ml, we will consume almost 15 grams of sugar in each cup. This favors the feeling of hunger to increase, since aperitif drinks are created to whet your appetite. Therefore, the calories consumed will be much higher, despite not containing alcohol.

However, it should be noted that it contains less than half the calories. Specifically, 60 calories compared to 140. This is due to the almost non-existence of alcohol, which, as we well know, contributes empty calories. That is, they do not contain any nutritional value, only energy. In this case, it is recommended to drink water as the first healthy option. And, in the case of wanting to drink something different, the best bet would be soft drinks with zero added sugar.
