To the surprise of many, Mercadona continues to launch new products from its + Proteins range. Low-priced dairy with great amounts of protein and no added sugar, but is your new protein mousse also healthy?
Despite the fact that Lidl continues to attract attention with its protein ice creams, Hacendado has proposed to face it with a protein mousse. We have a hunch that they are also preparing a new ice cream for the same range, but possibly after the summer.
Mercadona protein mousse ingredients
To find out if this new product is really healthy, the most important thing is to decipher its composition and its nutritional value. For now we have only obtained the ingredients for the vanilla flavored mousse, although it should not vary greatly with the chocolate ones.
Its list of ingredients is made up of “skimmed milk, milk protein 7%, cream, gelatin of animal origin, modified starch, thickeners (gum, guar, carrageenan), lactase, natural bourbon vanilla flavoring, sweeteners (E6, sucralose), color (carotenes) and natural aroma«.
Being a mousse, the texture of the dairy product should be thicker than a yogurt or milkshake. That is why water is dispensed with among its ingredients and bets on cream and gelatin of animal origin (possibly pork). Undoubtedly, what has attracted the most attention among its components is the presence of carrageenan. We had previously found this thickener in flavored protein yogurts and cold drinks. On the other hand, Mercadona's protein shakes that come in cardboard packages do not contain this substance.
Carrageenans have become a thickener that many prefer to avoid in order not to harm their health, since high consumption can increase intestinal inflammation. However, by taking it in a timely manner, you will not be exceeding any dose that could put your health at risk.
Regarding the nutritional value, for every 100 grams of product we find:
- Energy value: 76 calories
- Fats: 1 grams
- Saturated: 1 grams
- Carbohydrates: 5 grams
- Sugars 4 grams
- Protein: 10 grams
- Salt: 0 grams
Mercadona's protein mousse once again contributes 20 grams of this nutrient, whose origin is in the protein of milk. It is not a product for celiacs, but yes suitable for lactose intolerant.

Two flavors at a good price
For now, Mercadona has released the flavored protein mousse chocolate y vanilla. They are options that taste similar to the protein shakes that the brand itself already has. The price of each individual package is 1'39 €, so it costs practically the same as the large container of the famous protein yogurt. That is, half the quantity at the same price. For now, the supermarkets in Valencia are the only ones that enjoy this new product, but in a few weeks we will find it available on the rest of the shelves.
Logically, it is a novel and occasional product, so it will be taken as a treat and not as something common for breakfast or snacks. Also, after analyzing the ingredients, there will be many who have not been convinced.
