Radar COVID: this is how the application works to detect cases of coronavirus

radar covid application coronavirus

The Spanish government announced a month ago the launch of an application to track coronavirus cases. Radar COVID is not about geolocating us, or sharing data with each other. Don't worry, no one will know who you've been with or what your personal details are, it's totally anonymous.

For it to work correctly, all you have to do is have the app and bluetooth activated. When the mobiles are close to each other, they will "communicate" and save the information to know which ones they have been close to for more than 15 minutes.

How does the app work?

When you download Radar COVID you will realize that at no time does it ask for personal data. It will only require having Bluetooth active to be able to continue working. You do not have to register either phone numbers, names or type of identification. The system gives us an identification code that we cannot even access, so the regulations of being completely anonymous are complied with.

When a person tests positive for COVID, a code will appear in their medical report to enter in the section «Send your diagnosis» to confirm the positive. In this way there will be no doubts about possible false positives and the application will know that you are a real case.

As soon as this data has been entered, the people who have been in contact with that mobile during over 15 minutes they will receive an alert stating that someone you were close to for at least 15 minutes has tested positive for coronavirus. At no time will you know who is positive, nor will the positive know who their possible infections have been. So you can be a close friend and not even have knowledge of your identity.

With this information we can start the process to get tested for COVID-19. However, you must bear in mind that this procedure is different in each Autonomous Community, and since health competencies are derived from each CCAA, it is not yet implemented in all of them at the same time.

Is it sure it doesn't invade my privacy?

A Twitter user has compiled the permissions that the most used applications usually ask for, such as Instagram, WhatsApp or Tik Tok. The Government of Spain does not seek to control you, listen to your calls or access your contacts. Cheer up to collaborate in this fight and stay safe from possible infections.

It is now available for free for iOS and Android devices.
